Based on my own experience, there are quite number of diet myths that has been told and practised. In order to make things clear, here, i listed down some of them with an explanation.
CHECK IT OUT!
People inherit being overweight
•Scientists have been working hard to identify genes that have the potential to make us fat. And it does seem there may be a genetic link, but only in a small number of people.
•They believe that while we might inherit ‘fat’ genes from our parents, we also inherit their bad habits such as a poor diet and lack of exercise and it’s these poor lifestyle habits that have a more important part to play in weight gain.
Potatoes, bread, pasta and rice are fattening
•There’s actually no proof that carb-rich foods are more likely to make us gain weight than any other food.
•Ultimately, it’s an excess of calories that makes us pile on the pounds, and it really doesn’t matter where those extra calories come from.
•In fact, more often than not, it’s the fat we add to carbs that boosts the calorie content, such as butter on toast, creamy sauces with pasta and frying potatoes to make chips.
Nighttime Eating Makes You Fat
•There's no conclusive proof that late-night meals cause you to put on weight.
•What we do know is that too many calories cause weight gain, and many night eaters do tend to overeat and choose high-calorie foods.
•Eating right before bedtime can lead to heartburn and indigestion. So try to stick to regular and earlier mealtime.
Switch to Sea Salt to Reduce Sodium
DIET FACTS :
•By weight, gourmet salts have about the same sodium as plain old table salt. Add flavor with pepper, herbs, and spices instead.
•Besides, we get about 75% of our total salt intake from processed and prepared foods like soups, condiments, mixes, cheeses, and canned goods.
I don't need to diet or exercise if I'm taking a weight-loss supplement
•Practically every supplement’s label, not to mention every weight-loss expert and dietitian will tell you that if you want to shed pounds you’ll also need to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
•Even the over-the-counter drug Alli, a half-strength version of the prescription weight-loss medication orlistat, should be thought of as a boost to dieting and exercise, not a replacement for either.
Green-tea supplements burn fat
•Green-tea extract may promote weight loss. But taking a green tea supplement or drinking cup after cup of the tea itself isn't likely to produce significant or lasting weight loss.
•Any effect you see from green tea is probably due to the caffeine.
Low-fat foods always help you lose weight
DIET FACTS :
•Foods that are described as ‘low-fat' or 'fat-free' aren’t automatically low in calories or calorie-free.
In fact, some low-fat products may actually be higher in calories than standard products a containing extra sugars and thickeners to boost the flavour and texture.
You always gain weight when you stop smoking.
DIET FACTS:
•Some people gain weight when they stop smoking, some lose weight and some stay the same.
•While nicotine does increase the body's metabolism, its effect is small. It's far healthier to be an overweight non-smoker than not bother giving up because you think you'll put on weight.
•People tend to fall down is when they replace a cigarette with comfort food.
MYTH 9 :
Crash dieting or fasting makes you lose weight
•This may be true in the short term, but ultimately it can hinder weight loss.
•Losing weight over the long term burns off fat. Crash dieting or fasting not only removes fat but also lean muscle and tissue.
•The loss of lean muscle causes a fall in your basal metabolic rate - the amount of calories your body needs on a daily basis. This means your body will need fewer calories than it did previously, making weight gain more likely once you stop dieting.
•It's also why exercise is recommended in any weight-loss plan to build muscle and maintain your metabolic rate.
So, before kita percaya tentang apa-apa perkara yang dikatakan oleh sesetengah pihak, better kita check and study dulu..or ask the dietitian. Jangan main ikut je ok! have a good day.. :)
